Sign Language Assessment is a course that empowers educators to effectively assess sign language acquisition in deaf and hard-of-hearing children for inclusive learning environments.
For children who are deaf, sign language is in most cases their first language, and mastering it early is crucial for their educational journey. If a child does not actively use their first language within their first seven years, it hinders conceptual thinking. For the teacher, effective teaching and assessment of sign language are therefore vital. But accurately assessing sign language proficiency can be challenging. That is why we offer this course.
What will you learn in this course?
The course Sign Language Assessment equips educators with the skills to monitor and support sign language acquisition in the early years of a child’s development. You get access to our specially developed Sign Language Assessment Tool and receive training on how to maximize the use of this tool. Supported by this tool, the course allows you to accurately assess sign language proficiency, including fingerspelling, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. The course also helps you identify areas that are challenging in sign language acquisition and develop intervention strategies to support deaf learners. You will not only gain theoretical knowledge but also learn practical skills.
Who is it suitable for?
This course is designed for teachers in (I)NGO education programs, universities or teacher training institutions for pre- or in-service training, school administrators of deaf or inclusive schools, and any other organization that intends to invest in making inclusive education work for children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Due to the necessity of on-location training (with a group), the course is currently not available for individual enrollment. You can, however, request the course for your institution or organization.
What type of course is this?
This is an on-location course, so 100% of the training will take place on location. This can be at your own institution, for example.
